Dr marybel Garcia thank you very much superintendent Garcia for being with us thank you for allowing us to be a part of this very important conversation and really sharing I think what's happening inside of classroom is it is really important for the community to understand well in the end you know parents of course who have kids in school state they get more of a front row seat to this but those of us that don't have kids in school currently we care about this don't necessarily know what's going on but what are you saying it in El Monte with your students you know we we started school at the end of August and as we were planning to reopen School similar to Norco we opened up in the spring and actually we were able to maintain Extended Learning pods off about the pandemic so we were we were open for families that needed to send their kids somewhere somewhere safe in order to connect virtually to our a virtual learning during the pandemic so so as a result are you connected to the needs of our school Community when we opened up in the spring we were focused specifically on the loss of instructional time you know we didn't want to put the blame on the students it was really as a lack of time so we focused on essential skills really prepared them for this upcoming year and you know just like my colleagues it's been this this tremendous lift right to parallel plan for different scenarios but we knew that eventually we were going to be able to open and and when we were able to open idea was that we were going to start on day one with a series of interventions and a series I was really focusing on those relationships and making sure that we take care of our people make sure that they are whole you have focusing on Better Community the entire time we've provided resources outside of Reading Writing and math you know with the intent of making sure that the you know when the doors were able to open people would be able to walk in and feel comfortable and safe and pick up where we left off our data has been is been really great to see we just finished and Baseline Diagnostics and our data is exactly where we were prepared to make it so we didn't see that loss that you referred to earlier we're focusing on every student and making sure that our intervention plan we've hired intervention teachers we've added just so you know I work for that we have a dynamic team of counselors the workers mfts and counselors that are supporting students alongside the academic did you hire more like Jerry almendarez was talking about in Santa Ana were you able to hire more mental health professionals absolutely also expanded our intern program so we're working very closely with the local universities so that they can play some of those students that are looking to to work in those fields and and Noah be here in our district and assist with our plan well that's got to be very heartening to see those the students back where they were free pandemic and I'm sure you want to see growth even from there going going forward as well as all school districts to are you dealing with shortages of teachers and others cast members this many districts are so I will I will make a Shameless plug now that you know we are we are hiring and I know that my colleagues are as well if there's if there's anyone out there that wants to touch the future please reach out to your local school district as there's lots of we are hiring there is a shortage of substitutes that bus drivers instructional support Specialists you name it and and I think this is a wonderful time to to come into this beautiful and Majestic profession requirement for employees are is more of it people being reluctant to come to work in those jobs because kids aren't yet vaccinated it was a lot of changes during the pandemic with employment in general and if people you know start to make their way back into just jobs you know that there's there's a lot of options and there's a lot of opportunities and so I were competing with you know Amazon delivery drivers right or Transportation departments we're competing with just sent a lot of different opportunities that are and so you know I think there's we could do a better job of probably promoting these viable jobs Shameless plug a business has an opportunity to connect to
