CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond visited Rio Hondo School in El Monte City School District on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. Superintendent Thurmond's purpose of the visit was to observe the school and District's Nutrition Services program as well as the school's day-to-day operations. Mr. Thurmond has been a major advocate for Universal Student Meals and wanted to see firsthand how Districts are tackling meal service, especially during the pandemic. Mr. Thurmond held media availability after his visit outside Rio Hondo School.

good afternoon and thank you for joining us on this wonderful a fall a day as you can see we are thrilled for many many reasons first and foremost because you see kids in the background after a year of school closures over your school clothes there's a tooth been so wonderful to see our kids here every single day and then secondly we have the wonderful visit today of our wonderful State superintendent mr. Tony Thurmond represents all that's good in reopening our school CID we're not complacent the idea that there's Equity the idea that from this point forward kids get what they need in school as a result of his leadership and so I'm thrilled to have him here before introducing mr. Thurman times like to welcome East Ortega a to the podium to also remark on to the school thank you dr. Garcia I just want to start by saying that we are honored to have the opportunity to have a Thurman in the steam join us here at Rio Hondo the great School in Waterford community and in the wonderful District when you got the opportunity today to really highlight some of the water for the wonderful lunch meal program that we have here in our district in here at Rio Hondo school right it's being done in a safe manner so really I think we're all here that's it. Like to give our board present the opportunity to also greet you with our board President also represents the wonderful work in the leadership that's guide work Danielle Monte City School District board president hi thank you so much was just the man for being here today it really just shows that 58 is here supporting the work that we're doing as a community to service Minnesota Monte City School District thank you at this time is my distinct pleasure to really well so I'm a champion of all students mr. Tony Thurmond thank you board president mehndi and thank you great principal Mr Ortega the best part of this job is when you get to be out of school and when you're out of the school you get the real you get to know what's happening in our school communities what are students in Daphne and just a few minutes I've seen some of the best examples of what's going on for education for our students anywhere in our state and I like the command the team here and thank them for their incredible leadership and commitment and this community doing great things this is the mighty El Monte community in a fabulous district and at a fabulous school I'm proud of what I've seen today of the Eagles the purpose of the visit was to focus on Universal meals but we got to see so much more than just Universal meals but of course we are preparing all of our schools for the point where every student who needs a meal will get a meal regardless of their financial background it won't be about paperwork it won't be about what they paid any student who needs a meal with getting me off and now to Universal meals soon as you can expect beginning in 2223 to get breakfast and lunch and so we are ramping up this effort Statewide to help our schools Rio Hondo Today Show since it's already happening students are getting meals and it at the rate of Justin's March 2025 and 1/2 million meals served this community has an incredible thing it shows that the will continue to be the center of what our kids need in our families need and it's just a pleasure to see that I got to go to work out having the chance to serve some meals I want to thank our our classified staff who work with our kids these are hard times everything is difficult even in a meal program you think about it right now the nation is experiencing a shortage of materials of resources of Staff prices are high and we've literally written to the US Department of Education to ask for I'd ask for higher rates of reimbursement the Department of Agriculture and US Congress to provide higher rates of reimbursement so that we can reach it why is it so important we all know if you're hungry it's just harder to learn you can still learn I see that it's somebody who grew up on the free lunch program I grew up on you know what would have been today's EBT program the food stamp program and it says someone ate a lot of government cheese we needed food donations in my household to help us overcome poverty we didn't go hungry and the most important public program in my household was getting an education and we saw so many great examples here today and so just know that right now we are going to be going to school opening dr. Garcia you're right it is so important during this time that our kids have access to social connection direct connection to the Educators social emotional learning support but we also see this trend of connecting Universal meals to things like Universal Tek preschool for every single four year old rolling out anti-racism grants and schools all across the state we're going to have expanded program for after-school programming to support our students and families that we going to have more mental health is $4 in mental health programming dollars in a our community schools program wrap around mental health health social services but they're really transformational program that can change climate all across our state things that need to think differently about how they address social justice and racial Justice Community Schools will be that and so it's just been great to be here today to see one of the great programs around Universal meals and action to have a chance to spend time with students and Educators administrators family members and leaders who are doing great things we look forward to coming back if you all will have us want to lift up but we seen today in this district and at this school as a great example of things that are working in our state and that should be replicated in our state I'm grateful for what I saw here today continue the messaging around Universal meals around vaccines around supporting safety measures for our schools I loved all the protocols that we start here for covid mitigation and so all-in-all just a really great day we saw a lot of great things in just a few moments and proud to be the dates and all I can say is is no ramps it's been a great day thank you will take them any of us can otherwise we will let these good folks get back to school with the classrooms and we thank you for today seasonal questions would you say thank you and I hope that you continue to follow us on this new you no effort as we continue to visit schools lifting up the importance of universal meals and how it connects to make in California schools even better.
