Superintendent’s response to LCAP parent comments:
Parent participation and workshops :
Parents inquired if there can be additional courses offered to teach parents how to motivate their students. They asked if there could be a district-level community liaison, and improve access to Parent Square.
Response: We currently provide an 8-hour district-level community liaison, funded out of Title 1 and the LCAP. We also hired two additional 6-hour district-level liaisons, one Vietnamese-speaking liaison, and one Mandarin/Cantonese speaking liaison. Our liaisons work together to survey parents, and we use data to determine what workshops can be offered during the school year. We welcome parents' input for your suggestions. All parents have access to Parent Square, but if a parent cannot access Parent Square, important information can also be sent home in paper copies.
Parents recommended that the meals offered to students be reviewed, and offer meals that are more nutritious.
Response: Daily nutritional opportunities are an important piece of supporting the whole child, thus, recommendations and or concerns around pupil nutrition will be addressed through the funding and instructional channels related to other funding sources not related to the LCAP. Our meals meet the requirements of the USDA and are offered twice for students through our Breakfast in Classroom program, and our lunch program. Students staying for afterschool enrichment are also served a nutritious supper meal. Prior to COVID, the Department of Instruction engaged students in taste testing before adding items to the menu, as well as working with community partners to bring items such as Dominos, Pick-up-Stix, and Subway. These recommendations have been forwarded to our Nutrition Department.
Parents enquired about enrichment courses being offered and/or expanded. Some of the suggestions were extracurricular classes in the arts and sciences, dance classes, and crafting classes.
Response: Currently, the LCAP funds enrichment programs during the day. We did, however, receive additional funding for next school year - the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program. We are in the process of hiring a coordinator, Engagement and Enrichment Coordinator, who will assist in the development and implementation of the program. We plan to offer tutoring, intervention classes, as well as extra-curricular and sports for the students.
Would it be possible to offer opportunities for students to visit different people working in different career paths to develop leadership in our students?
Response: As part of our enrichment and opportunity program, students will have the opportunity to engage in different field trips and activities. Offering more opportunities to explore career pathways and areas of interest is a great idea!
Can parents be provided with assistance with gas money to attend events?
Response: The district can assist with mileage reimbursement or by receiving taxi vouchers. Parents can access these by contacting the office of Student Support Services.
Student Safety
Is it possible to have better monitoring of the schools entrances to keep students safe? Training staff on first aide, especially supervision supervisors.
Response: Safety is our number one priority. We will work closely with school site staff to ensure that safety is always prioritized.
Can we offer workshops on bullying for students and parents?
Response: Students receive different workshops on bullying, and we can definitely arrange to offer parents with additional resources.
Why does the school district not allow graduations for kindergarten or 6th grade students?
Response: We believe that every child deserves to be celebrated and promoted. It is important to host award assemblies and recognize students' academic and social emotional achievements. The district does have award ceremonies for all grade levels, and a promotion ceremony when students finish the 8th grade. They will experience their first (we hope of many!) graduations once they complete high school, college, and other higher education degrees and certificates.
