The Magic of Musical Theater
By: Mina Gonzalez
Music is more than just an extracurricular activity, it is a vital part of a well-rounded education. It ignites creativity, builds confidence, and provides students with an outlet for self-expression. As El Monte City School District (EMCSD) students take the stage in the upcoming months, they will have the opportunity to showcase their talent, hard work, and passion for the performing arts. These musical productions offer a unique opportunity for students to develop essential life skills while sharing their artistry with the community.
Recent productions like Shirpser’s The Wizard of Oz and Cortada’s Frozen Jr. have already captivated audiences, giving families a front-row seat to the dedication and effort students have put into their performances. This is a testament to the dedication that EMCSD has to its students by fostering their creativity and allowing them an environment to shine bright. Fortunately, there are many more musical theater productions to come, that are sure to bring more student magic to the stage. Cortada 5th grader Denisse stated, “My favorite part of musical theater is that I get to dance and express myself.” Opportunities like these allow students to embrace their individuality, explore their artistic potential, and build lasting friendships with their peers.
However, the road to a stellar performance is no easy feat. Leading to every production is hours of practice from students memorizing their lines, cues, and choreography. “What has helped me memorize my lines is the teachers helping me, reading off the book and practicing in front of the mirror and my family”, says 6th grader Oscar, of Cortada. Their commitment shines through as they fine-tune every detail, ensuring that when it’s showtime, they are ready to give it their all.
One of the most remarkable aspects of EMCSD’s musical theater program is its inclusivity. Students from all grade levels of each school are encouraged to participate. While some may feel hesitant to join, they should know they are always welcome. As Cortada 6th grader Sophia wisely said, "If you don't reach out for your dream, you'll never know you’re able to achieve.” The stage is a place for everyone, and the enthusiasm surrounding these productions proves just how positive of an impact performing arts has on the community.
With so many talented students bringing stories to life, the future of EMCSD’s musical theater program is brighter than ever! These productions not only entertain but also instill confidence, teamwork, and a fruitful education. So, as the next wave of performances approaches, one thing is certain — EMCSD students are ready to take the stage and shine!
Interested students should reach out to their school office if they wish to participate in next school year's musical theater program.
