California School Climate, Health, and Learning Surveys
The California School Climate, Health, and Learning Surveys (CalSCHLS) focus on the perceptions of students, parents, and staff. They were developed by WestED and are supported by the California Department of Education (CDE). While voluntary and anonymous, together, these surveys provide actionable information related to school climate and other key indicators linked to positive student outcomes. The CDE requires school districts to administer the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) to students in grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 and to all students in alternative high schools.
CalSCHLS is a family of three surveys:
- The CalSCHLS Survey for Kids is the largest statewide student survey of resiliency, protective factors, risk behaviors, and school climate in the nation.
- The CalSCHLS Survey for Staff provides a means to confidentially obtain staff perceptions about learning and teaching conditions.
- The CalSCHLS Survey for Parent is designed to provide teachers, administrators, and other school staff with information directly from parents.
If you have questions about El Monte City School District’s or your school’s CalSCHLS, please first contact your school’s principal.
