California School Climate, Health, and Learning Surveys

The California School Climate, Health, and Learning Surveys (CalSCHLS) focus on the perceptions of students, parents/guardians, and staff. They were developed by WestED and are supported by the California Department of Education (CDE). While voluntary and anonymous, together, these surveys provide actionable information related to school climate and other key indicators linked to positive student outcomes.

CalSCHLS is a family of three surveys:
  • The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide student survey of resiliency, protective factors, risk behaviors, and school climate in the nation. The CDE requires school districts to administer the CHKS to students in grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 and to all students in alternative high schools.
  • The California School Staff Survey (CSSS) provides a means to confidentially obtain staff perceptions about learning and teaching conditions.
  • The California School Parent Survey (CSPS) is designed to provide teachers, administrators, and other school staff with information directly from parents/guardians.
If you have questions about El Monte City School District’s or your school’s CalSCHLS, please first contact your school’s principal.
