Behavior Intervention Specialist Program
The El Monte City School District’s (EMCSD) Multi-Tiered System of Support framework recognizes that to maximize student outcomes, the learning process is driven by an integration of academics, social-emotional learning, and behavior. A behavior intervention specialist is a dedicated school staff member who is an expert on evidence-based behavior management strategies that can be applied in school, home, and community settings. These behavior management strategies are expected to improve aspects of the school environment that affect students’ behavior and thus their academic outcomes. EMCSD’s behavior intervention specialist program provides educational opportunities that enable school staff and parents/guardians to obtain knowledge and to acquire skills to support their students’ behavioral needs. Behavior intervention specialists support students at the schoolwide, class-wide, small group, and individual student levels. Behavior intervention specialists collaborate with educational partners to determine the function, or purpose, of students’ challenging behaviors, to create a plan of action, and to monitor students’ behavioral progress.
